Release drawers and bedroom stand tops by untangling your jewellery collection, and other decorative pieces, and showing it in the best natural light. Bring your shimmering jewellery out of dark drawers and clunky containers and, instead, suspend it on attractive hooks, or padded clothes hangers trimmed with ribbons and beads. The peculiar sequinned jacket or smoothe faux-fur stole wouldn't go amiss either... Who needs wall structure art?

We spoke to Myriam Ruffo, Mind of Bed rooms and Restrooms at IKEA UK, who gave us the 101 on the best mattresses for the three key sleeping positions; back again, front and aspect. 'Be sure to test the firmness and consider your sleeping style, to make sure you choose a firmness that offers you the correct returning support,' she says. 'Your bed plays a huge part in your health and well-being considering you may spend around eight hours every evening sleeping on it.'
Built-in wardrobes aren't always the best option in awkward-shaped period sleeping rooms. This cool country-style bedroom uses the full-height alcoves either aspect of the fire place to house two typical white wardrobes, which combine perfectly with the cool colour pallette. Because these don't reach the roof the room keeps an airy feel, but it also means there's room for wicker baskets to be seated neatly at the top for a bit more organised style.

When designing a bedroom, the most obvious location to start is with the bed. After all, with out a good bed, it's difficult to get a good night's sleep. Make sure you choose the right size foundation for how big is your bedroom. A super king size foundation will dominate a small bedroom, rendering it difficult to go around the space or fit in any other bedroom furniture, while a standard double bed might look a bit lost in a huge bedroom. Strategy your bedroom, and make sure the bed you choose will allow for at least 70cm of blood circulation space across the sides and end of the bed.
